About Artful Gardens Design, Installation & Maintenance

About Us

Artful Gardens is a full-service garden design, installation, and maintenance studio based in San Miguel de Allende. Founded in 1995 by designer Rob Johnson, the firm has long been known for creating distinctive gardens that blend thoughtful design, craftsmanship, and a deep understanding of the local landscape.

Today, under the leadership of Jhonny Gutierrez, Artful Gardens collaborates closely with homeowners to bring those designs to life through expert installation and attentive garden care. From architectural hardscapes and lush plantings to water features and curated outdoor details, each project is designed to complement the character of the home while enhancing the experience of outdoor living in San Miguel.

Hardscapes are elements made of stone, tile, concrete, brick, and other hard material. Examples of hardscape include irrigation systems, lighting systems, sound systems, walkways, driveways, retaining walls, stairs, decks, patio covers, outdoor kitchens, pergolas, follies, trellises, and more -- even sculptures and other works of art!

In contrast, softscapes are made of plants. Examples of softscape include trees, shrubs, grass, ground cover, flowers, and other living plants.

Water features are landscaping components that involve water. Examples include waterfalls, water fountains, waterways, pools, ponds, and more.

Everything else can be categorized as outdoor decor. These are smaller, moveable landscaping structures such as statues, birdbaths, benches, potted plants, patio furniture, lighting, and more.
